Interested in Volunteering?


Thank you for your interest in volunteering for Girls on the Run of York County! Below is a description of what is involved with coaching our program. Please call to register to volunteer. We also have numerous volunteer opportunities aside from coaching that we need help with. Please feel free to contact us for further information.

 

General Information:

  • The programs is offered twice a year: Fall (mid-September to mid December) Spring (mid-February to mid-May).
  • Most of our programs meet twice a week after school for one hour. We have a few that meet one day a week and also in the morning. Coaches are expected to attend every session.
  • Each site has a head coach and one to two assistant coaches.

Requirements for Volunteers:

  • Genuine interest in leading a healthy life.
  • Interest in physical fitness or running.
  • Commitment to the mission of GOTR.
  • Reliable, honest and positive outlook on life.
  • Interest in the issues facing young women today.
  • Desire to get involved in a nonprofit organization and help create public awareness.

Head Coach, duties include:

  • To prepare bi-weekly lesson plans. GOTR of York County provides all materials for the lessons. Coaches prepare by reading the lessons and cutting out game pieces.
  • To serve as a role model for the girls by being on time, by listening attentively, by having a positive demeanor and outlook, and by leading a healthy lifestyle.
  • To encourage and cheer-on the girls as they play games and run laps.
  • To coach the girls on proper stretching, running form, hydration, and sports nutrition.
  • To mediate disputes among participants in a prompt, respectful manner.
  • To attend regularly scheduled meetings with the Council Director and other area coaches.
  • To be your real self with the girls at all times, and above all, have fun with them.
  • Attending the end of season 5K.

Requirements:

  • CPR & First Aid certification.
  • Attend a full day coaches training with the council director.
  • Attend approximately 3 coaches meeting per session.
  • Coordinate the community service project, the running fundraiser, and the end of the season party.

Assistant Coach, duties include:

  • Attending workouts and serving as number one encourager, cheer leader, finish line greeter and high fiver.
  • Provide support for the head coach, at times substituting for her.
  • Provide one-on-one attention to girls in need of extra help
  • Running or walking with the girls and encouraging them to put their best effort into the workouts.
  • Giving advice on running or speed-walking technique and pacing.
  • Attending the end of season 5K
